The Electric Bike Revolution

Electric Bikes in Guernsey, Alderney and Sark continue to increase with sales for the first seven months of 2021 reaching 43% of all bikes sold at Ian Brown’s Cycle Shop. Reasons to be cheerful The increase in demand coincided with the pandemic and is the perfect introduction to starting to use a bicycle again. Whether for commuting, exercising or just sightseeing, the benefits of easier parking, quicker journeys, health and wellbeing associated with the exercise of riding a bicycle remain where the downsides of uphill gradients, headwinds or distance are all eliminated. Do you still get the benefits of cycling? Of course you still get the exercise, as modern electric bikes are classed as “assist”, and if you don’t pedal, they will not work. You still get the fresh air in your lungs, your heart rate increases, and it is impossible not to smile. It feels like proper cycling and not cheating. It is a great form of exercise, and you will feel fitter, lose weight and have fun when riding an electric bike. Are they expensive? The cost of an electric bike is in the region of £1750 for the better ones. These typically have mid motors by well known motor manufacturers such as Bosch, Yamaha, Sanyo and Shimano; the motors are connected to the cranks which complements the energy of rider and machine and can feel more natural. How far will they go? The range of the mid-motored bikes can be as high as 100 miles on the economy setting, so well within the range of rides around Guernsey, Alderney or Sark. Styles Styles of bike can be anything you like from Classic Vintage to Full Off-Road Suspension models and even racing bikes, as well as a wide variety of commuter styles. Load-carrying bikes are also available where it is possible to carry larger items, as well as up to four children!
